Avalon is a professional soprano and music tutor based in London. She read Music at the University of York, graduating with a First Class Honours in 2015, and is currently studying for a Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a scholarship. After graduating, Avalon forged a busy schedule teaching across the East Midlands and singing professionally. She was awarded a VOCES8 Scholarship in 2016, as well as Stile Antico's prestigious inaugural bursary for young singers in 2015. In March 2017, Avalon toured to Florence with I Fagiolini as part of a series of exclusive concerts of renaissance repertoire.
Avalon has performed as a soloist in operas, such as Massenet's Cendrillon, as well as oratorios including Handel's Messiah and Bach's Mass in B minor. In 2016, Avalon played First Witch in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with VOCES8 and Mary Bevan at Milton Abbey. Avalon has particularly enjoyed singing with baroque ensembles, including the Helios Ensemble, Les Inventions, The English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, and was privileged to perform Vivaldi's Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera with a period ensemble in the presence on Dame Janet Baker in 2015. Recently performed repertoire includes arias from Mozart's The Good-Hearted Churl, Handel's Julius Caesar and Alcina, and a selection of songs by Monteverdi, William Walton, Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell and Frank Bridge.
Avalon has an extensive choral background: she is an experienced choral singer, proficient sight-reader, and is comfortable in a variety of choral genres, including liturgical music, madrigals and close harmony. In particular, Avalon is experienced in early music performance, and is a confident consort singer. Throughout her life, Avalon has appeared on numerous recordings with different record labels and choirs, most recently on a Naxos recording of Delius and Bax with the Carice Singers.
During her time at university, Avalon sang with several choirs including The 24 and the Yorkshire Bach Choir. With The 24, she toured to Serbia, China and Hong Kong, performed on live BBC broadcasts and at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Avalon also appeared singing Gesualdo on BBC Radio 3's In Tune.
Avalon began her musical education as a chorister at Lincoln Cathedral and music scholar at Lincoln Minster School. She also attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department, studying voice, trumpet, piano and composition. As a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Avalon took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth and performed at the Royal Albert Hall in a Prom with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra.
Music education is very important to Avalon, and this year, she cofounded a new annual music festival, Leicester MusicFest, taking on the role of Events Coordinator. She will also be a Course Assistant at Aberystwyth MusicFest this summer. Avalon studies Voice with Marie Vassiliou and Dr Ron Morris, and has attended masterclasses with I Fagiolini, Richard Jackson, Richard Stokes and Mark Meylan.
